The color wheel is like a rainbow that someone bent into a circle. Artists made it so all the colors could hold hands and show how they are related. When you understand the color wheel, you can pick colors on purpose instead of just guessing.

It all starts with three special colors called the primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. They are called primary because you cannot mix any other colors together to make them. Every other color on the wheel is born from these three.

When you mix two primary colors, you get a secondary color. Red and yellow make orange, yellow and blue make green, and blue and red make purple. On the wheel, each secondary color sits right between the two primaries that made it.

Artists use the color wheel like a map. Warm colors like red, orange, and yellow live on one side and feel like sunshine and fire. Cool colors like blue, green, and purple live on the other side and feel like water and shade.

You can find the color wheel almost everywhere once you look. It hides inside crayon boxes, paint sets, and even the color pickers on a computer. Knowing it helps you plan a picture before you ever pick up a brush.
