Far away from the Sun live four huge planets called the gas giants. Their names are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. They are much bigger than the rocky planets, but they are made mostly of gas and ice instead of solid rock.

Because gas giants are made of gas, they do not have hard ground to stand on. If you tried to land on one, you would sink down into thick, swirling clouds. Deep inside, the gas gets squeezed so tightly that it turns into liquid.

Jupiter is the biggest planet in the whole solar system. It is so large that all the other planets could fit inside it. Jupiter even has a giant storm called the Great Red Spot that has been spinning for hundreds of years.

Saturn is famous for its beautiful rings. The rings are not solid; they are made of billions of pieces of ice and rock, some as small as a snowball and some as big as a house. Saturn's rings make it the most dazzling planet to see through a telescope.

Uranus and Neptune are the two farthest gas giants, and they are a lovely blue color. They are so far from the Sun that they are extremely cold, and they are sometimes called ice giants because of all the icy material inside them.

All four gas giants have rings and many moons, but Saturn's rings are the brightest. These faraway giants spin very fast, which helps make their wild storms and stripey clouds.
