An adaptation is a special body part or a special way of acting that helps a living thing stay alive where it lives. Every plant and animal has adaptations that fit its home, which we call its habitat. A polar bear's thick fur and a cactus's sharp spines are both adaptations.

Think about a duck's feet. They are wide and flat like little paddles, so the duck can push against the water and swim fast. Webbed feet are an adaptation for a life spent on ponds and lakes.

Adaptations do not only help animals. Plants have them too. A cactus stores water inside its thick stem so it can survive in a hot, dry desert where rain almost never falls.

Some adaptations are body parts you can see, like sharp claws, long necks, or strong beaks. Others are behaviors, which are things an animal does, like a bird building a cozy nest to keep its eggs warm and safe.

Adaptations take a very long time to appear. Over many, many years, the living things that fit their habitat best are the ones that survive and have babies. Little by little, helpful traits get passed to the next family.

Scientists study adaptations to understand why animals and plants look and act the way they do. When you notice a giraffe's long neck or a fish's smooth shape, you are really looking at an adaptation that helps it live in its own special place.
