You already know how to sort answers into groups and count them. But a long list of numbers can be boring and hard to compare. What if you could turn those numbers into a picture instead? That is exactly what a bar graph does.

A bar graph turns numbers into bars so you can spot the biggest and smallest at a glance. Each group gets its own bar, and the more you count in a group, the taller its bar grows.

Say seven friends love apples and two love grapes. On the graph, the apple bar shoots up tall, and the grape bar stays short. Your eyes see the tall bar first and know right away that apples win.

The best thing about a bar graph is speed. You do not have to read every number one by one. A quick look tells you which group is the biggest, which is the smallest, and how they stack up against each other.

People use pictures from data everywhere. A weather app shows bars for how much rain fell each day, and a teacher might graph how many books the class read each month. The picture tells the story faster than words.

So the next time you count something, try drawing it as bars. Turning numbers into a picture helps everyone see the answer, even from across the room.
