A skill is something you have learned how to do well. Reading, drawing, fixing a bike, cooking eggs, and solving math problems are all skills. Nobody is born knowing these things. You learn them by practicing again and again.

You can think of your skills like tools in a toolbox. Every time you learn something new, you add another tool. The more tools you have, the more kinds of problems you can solve for yourself and for other people.

Jobs are how grown-ups use their skills to help others and earn money. A doctor uses the skill of healing. A teacher uses the skill of explaining. A chef uses the skill of cooking. People pay for these skills because they need help that they cannot do themselves.

Here is the big idea: the more skills you can do, the more jobs people will pay you for. Someone who can only do one thing has fewer choices. Someone who has learned many things can pick from many different jobs.

Skills also help you do a job better and faster, which makes your work worth more. A builder who has built a hundred houses works faster and makes fewer mistakes than someone building their very first one. Practice turns a skill into something valuable.

This is why going to school matters so much. Every subject you learn is another tool in your toolbox. The skills you build today will open doors to jobs you might not even know about yet.
