Weather is what the sky and air are doing right now, today, in one place. It can be sunny, rainy, snowy, windy, hot, or cold. Weather can change very fast, sometimes even from morning to afternoon.

Climate is different from weather because it looks at the big picture over a long time. Climate is what a place's weather is usually like year after year. To learn a place's climate, you look at many, many years of weather, not just one single day.

Here is an easy way to remember the difference: weather is like your mood today, but climate is like your personality over your whole life. One rainy day does not change a place's climate, just like one grumpy morning does not change who you really are.

Different places have very different climates. A desert has a hot, dry climate where it almost never rains. A rainforest has a warm, wet climate with rain nearly every day. Near the North Pole, the climate is cold and snowy for most of the year.

Knowing the difference helps us plan ahead. You check the weather to decide if you need an umbrella today. You think about climate to decide what clothes to pack for a place, what crops a farmer can grow, or what animals might live there.
