A civilization is a big group of people who live and work together in an organized way. Just like a cake needs certain ingredients, a civilization needs a few important things to grow and last.

The first ingredient is farming. When people learned to grow their own food, they did not have to move around hunting all the time. They could stay in one place, and that let them build homes and store extra food.

Extra food led to the next ingredient: cities. When farmers grew more than one family could eat, other people were free to do different jobs, like making pots, weaving cloth, or trading. Lots of people living close together made towns and then cities.

Writing and laws are two more ingredients. Writing let people keep records, like who owned which field or how much grain was stored. Laws were shared rules that helped everyone know what was fair, so a large group could get along.

Have you noticed that many early civilizations started near rivers? Rivers gave people fresh water to drink, water for their crops, and an easy way to travel and trade by boat. Rich soil near rivers made farming easier.

So the recipe is farming, cities, writing, and laws, usually mixed together beside a river. When you find these ingredients in the past, you have probably found a civilization.
