Long before books and screens, people told stories out loud and passed them from grandparents to children. These old, handed-down stories are called folktales. Every time they were told, they traveled a little farther across the world.

A fable is a special short kind of folktale. Fables often have animals that talk and act like people, and each one teaches a clear lesson called a moral. A storyteller named Aesop made up many famous fables that people still read today.

In a fable, a clever fox or a slow turtle is not really about foxes and turtles at all. The animals stand for people and the way people behave. A greedy animal shows us what greed looks like, so we can spot it in real life.

Folktales come from every country on Earth. Some explain why the sky is high or how the tiger got its stripes. Others are just funny or a little bit scary. Because they were told out loud, the same tale can have different endings in different places.

These stories still matter because they carry wisdom from long ago in a way that is easy to remember. A moral wrapped inside a fun animal story sticks in your mind far better than a plain rule ever could.

Next time you read a folktale or fable, enjoy the talking animals, but also look for the moral. You are hearing the same wise idea that people have shared with each other for hundreds of years.
