Imagine trying to build a LEGO set with the steps all mixed up. You would put the roof on before the walls! Stories work the same way. Events need to happen in a clear order, or the reader gets confused about what came first.

Time-order words are special words that show the order of events. Words like first, next, then, and finally act like little signs on a road. They tell your reader exactly when each thing happens.

You use the word first to start. First, I woke up early. Then you keep the action moving with next and then. Next, I brushed my teeth. Then I ate my breakfast fast.

When you reach the end, the word finally tells your reader the story is wrapping up. Finally, I ran to catch the bus. That one word signals that you are almost done.

These words are the glue that holds your events together. Without them, your sentences feel like they are jumping all over the place. With them, your reader glides smoothly from one moment to the next.

You will find time-order words in recipes, science steps, and how-to guides too, not just in stories. Any time you explain how to do something step by step, these little words keep everything in the right order.
